Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), often referred to as “crib death,” is the unexplained and sudden death of an otherwise healthy baby, typically during sleep. It most commonly affects infants between 1 and 4 months old, with the vast majority of cases occurring before the baby reaches 6 months. While the exact cause remains unknown, researchers believe it may be linked to defects in the part of an infant’s brain that controls breathing and arousal from sleep. Factors like low birth weight, premature birth, or prenatal exposure to smoking can increase the risk.
Environmental and sleep-related factors are closely associated with SIDS. Placing a baby on their stomach or side to sleep, soft bedding, overheating, and sharing a bed with parents or siblings have all been linked to a higher risk. The “Back to Sleep” campaign (now known as “Safe to Sleep”), which encourages placing babies on their backs to sleep on a firm mattress with no loose bedding or toys, has significantly reduced SIDS cases since it was launched in the 1990s. Room-sharing without bed-sharing is also recommended, as it allows for easier monitoring while maintaining a safe sleep surface.
Despite the decline in SIDS rates, it remains a leading cause of death in infants under 1 year old. Ongoing research aims to uncover genetic and biological contributors to SIDS, with some studies investigating serotonin imbalances in the brainstem. While there’s no guaranteed way to prevent SIDS, adopting safe sleep practices drastically lowers the risk. Healthcare providers often stress a multi-faceted approach: consistent prenatal care, avoiding smoking and alcohol during pregnancy, and promoting breastfeeding, which has been associated with a protective effect.
